Meet Our New Services & Training Staff Member!
We think our staff at RCI are pretty rad, so when we have a new addition to the team, we really like to shine the spotlight on them! Recently, Kelly Brown joined the team as one of our new trainer/inspectors and we couldn’t be more excited to have her with us.
Learn a little more about her from the Q & A below as we welcome her to the RCI family. Keep your eyes peeled because she may be coming to a ropes course near you!
Where are you from?
I grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, though I was born in Escondido, California.
How did you hear about Ropes Courses, Inc.?
I found the position online and thought to myself, what an awesome job to have!
When did you start?
What was your past experience and how did it prepare you for this job?
Prior to working at RCI, I worked at my dad’s training company, Don Brown Learning and Development, for 5 years. His company provides leadership, sales and service training sessions to companies that sell products varying from fast food to medical equipment. Day to day, I was the point of contact for all of our clients and I also handled administrative duties, billing, communication profiling and our learning management system.
Tell us two fun facts about yourself.
At the moment my favorite color is red; this seems to change frequently though. Sometimes it’s blue or pink! My favorite place I’ve traveled to would have to be Maastricht, a city in the Netherlands. I studied abroad there for a semester in college and it was the best summer of my life!
Any hobbies you like to do in your free time outside of work?
My favorite activities are volleyball, basketball, riding horses and hanging out with loved ones.
What surprised you most when you first started at RCI?
Realizing just how big our company really was. We have ropes courses all over the world and we’re continuing to build our portfolio with other family fun attractions that I’m sure will be a hit with our current clients and new ones!
What does a typical day on the job involve?
A day on the job varies day to day, and that’s what I love about it! I could be booking travel and prepping for a client visit, traveling to the client’s facility or actually running a training session or completing an inspection on location. Since I started in March, I’ve been to Colorado, Tennessee, California, Florida and Alabama!
What is your favorite part about working at RCI so far?
My favorite part of working at RCI is meeting new people, learning how cool our products are and interacting with my coworkers. I recently got to travel to Colorado with our other trainer, Grace, and then to Tennessee with our Services Manager, Dan, and they were great opportunities to understand their training styles and get to know them a bit more on a personal level.
What is the biggest skill you’ve learned since you started working at RCI?
Being able to adapt. I’ve always been a go-with-the-flow kind of person, but handling situations that are unknown is a great skill to grow.
Are there any common misconceptions about what you do?
People think it’s just playing on courses and traveling but you work hard! There is paperwork to file, trips to organize and a lot of client contact, which I love.
What is your favorite part about working on a Sky Trail?
Our ropes courses are a ton of fun, yet challenging at times. I’m comfortable being on one because I know how safe they are, but when you get up to let’s say, the 4th level on an outdoor course, it’s another ballgame mentally. It’s awesome!
What is your biggest challenge at work?
Throughout my life, traveling was very set in stone and regimented. I’ve been traveling since I was a toddler and my dad’s job required him to travel a lot so I’m used to making precious time at home count. At RCI, we try to accommodate clients’ schedules as much as possible which sometimes results in last minute travel arrangements or changes to our schedule for us trainers on the fly. It’s something I’m learning how to juggle, but as I said, I’m very go-with-the-flow, so challenge accepted!
What aspect of your job do you enjoy the most?
Interacting with people from all walks of life is really cool: people energize me! I also love being on the move and not having to sit at a desk all day.
